ABOUT SECOND STAGE THEATER

Second Stage Theater produces work entirely by 21st century American playwrights both on and off Broadway. Dedicated to adventurous contemporary plays and musicals, bold new interpretations, and unique theatrical experiences, the work at Second Stage reflects diversity and inclusiveness. JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director, Development (Director) oversees the planning and implementation of institutional advancement and contributed revenue generation. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Director plays a key leadership role within the organization in strategic planning and board development. In collaboration with key staff, the Director provides support and guidance in overseeing the fundraising functions and activities across the organization that advances its mission and articulates its vision both internally and externally. To support organizational stability, this individual also works to identify new opportunities, craft new strategies, set long-term revenue goals, retain Second Stage’s loyal constituent base and partners, and cultivate donors.

MAJOR FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

STRATEGIC PLANNING

  • Works with the Executive Director, Artistic Director, and the Board to advance the organization’s mission by setting institutional, programmatic, and contributed revenue generation goals that align with the mission and monitors progress towards these goals.
  • Works with key staff to prioritize the organization’s efforts to meet strategic goals and objectives
  • Develops decision-making tools that take into consideration internal and external factors that affect the organization
  • Leads planning sessions with Staff, Board and stakeholders
  • Communicates strategic mission to relevant staff and ensures each employee understands their contribution to achievement of goals through job performance
  • Monitors and measures organizational performance throughout the year

BOARD DEVELOPMENT

  • Works with the Executive Director and Board to identify and cultivate new board members
  • Works with Executive Director to manage relevant Board Committees, including setting annual activity goals and providing Board with necessary materials and tools to accomplish those goals
  • Reports progress toward fundraising goals to Board at quarterly board meetings
  • Works with Executive Director and Manager, Individual Giving to maintain Board files (both soft and hard copy)

REVENUE MANAGEMENT

  • Sets contributed income strategy and targets and oversees organizational revenue calendar, regularly tracking overall progress across the following lines:
    • Foundation contributions
    • Government contributions and discretionary funds
    • Corporate contributions
    • Individual contributions, including Board
    • Corporate sponsorship
    • Special events
    • In-Kind gifts of pro bono legal services, special event spaces, and other services
  • Develops new strategies to expand contributed revenue generation
  • Works with the Executive Director to execute the strategy for the Hayes capital campaign, institutional advancement and major gift solicitations
  • Works with the Executive Director, Development Staff and Senior Staff to identify and cultivate prospective revenue sources for coming years
  • Oversees the cultivation, relationship management, and development of proposals and, with Director of Institutional Partnerships budgets for institutional donors, government agencies, and sponsors
  • Directs communications and correspondence with all major institutional, government and individual donors/sponsors
  • Works with the Executive Director and key staff on major donor, and sponsor meeting strategies and follow up
  • Oversees maintenance of donor, and sponsor records database and technology for receiving donations

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Ensures department operates within established financial guidelines
    • Ensures budget recommendations meet departmental and organizational goals
    • Budget recommendations are submitted within established timeframes
    • Budget expenditures are monitored throughout the year and variances are promptly reported and explained to Finance Department
  • Ensures budget dollars are used responsibly and introduces innovative ways to reduce costs
  • Monitors/Approves all expense requests by department staff

LEADERHIP

  • Assures appropriate staffing to support department
    • Monitors individual and departmental workload on a day-to-day basis and reassigns tasks as needed
    • Recommends changes to staffing level to support departmental goals and objectives
    • Selects competent staff and creates and develops work teams to implement department objectives
  • Promotes employee satisfaction and takes necessary action to maintain a productive and motivated staff
    • Encourages and responds to employee feedback on a regular basis
    • Demonstrates a professional demeanor in all dealings with colleagues, peers, and subordinate staff
    • Provides employees with required resources; empowers staff to act with appropriate authority and takes responsibility for their work processes
    • Approves all time off requests by department staff
  • Works with others toward shared goals
    • Offers assistance and shares in departmental responsibilities
    • Keeps all interested parties informed of relevant or pertinent developments
  • Communicates effectively and efficiently with all staff concerning relevant matters
    • Provides emergent or important information to staff in a clear and concise manner within a reasonable timeframe – either in writing or verbally
    • Addresses individual staff questions and concerns promptly and accurately within a reasonable timeframe

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus in Nonprofit Management or comparable professional experience; Master’s Degree in related fields preferred
  • Minimum ten (10) years’ experience with progressive responsibilities as a front-line fundraiser, major gift officer or principal gift officer
  • Must have experience building a Major Gift program and the expertise to develop the technical instruments, articulating resource needs, and forecasting models and revenue projections
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Tessitura, Wealth Engine or similar
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills.
  • Ability to tie organizational mission and business goals to fundraising opportunities.
  • Ability to interface with program officers, community leaders, politicians and business professionals.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.  Intimate knowledge of NYC funding community and an ability to speak publicly.
